Training for Healthcare Chaplains/Spiritual Care Professionals

There is a new approach to newly appointed chaplains/spiritual care professionals which provides for a locally tailored approach for the first months prior to study as detailed below. Details of the early stages of induction are attached here.

Education

Registration:   Full registration with the Board requires that applicants have a qualification relevant to their faith community or belief group and either

  • a UKBHC accredited post-graduate qualification in Healthcare Chaplaincy, OR
  • have completed two units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) within the Northern Ireland context alone , OR
  • have completed the Portfolio route.

Working as a Chaplain/Spiritual Care Professional:  The Board’s UKBHC 2020 Spiritual Care Competences For Healthcare Chaplains outlines the educational requirements for the various Agenda for Change (AfC) Bands in Healthcare Chaplaincy.  Alongside post-graduate certificate/diploma/degree courses, the development of CPE, and Portfolio routes to registration set the expectation that the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to be an autonomous practitioner at AfC Band 6 requires specialist healthcare chaplaincy training.   For more information about CPE and/or portfolio routes please contact the academicstandards.lead@ukbhc.org.uk.

Details of UKBHC accredited post-graduate chaplaincy education programs are listed below.  (Please note that Birmingham Newman University post-graduate certificate/diploma/degree courses are NOT accredited at the present time and cannot be used to apply for Full Registration or up-grades to Full Registration.)

The current guidance for providers about the requirements for courses seeking accreditation from UKBHC is detailed in the attached Requirements and Pathway to registration documents.
